Integration courses

Language is key to successful integration. In Germany, immigrants receive language instruction as part of their integration course. The objective is that migrants can make themselves understood in everyday situations and become more familiar with German society.

The second part of the integration course is known as the orientation course. This puts an emphasis on German culture, the legal system and ethical values.

You can find out more about the integration course on the following pages.

Content and schedule

Each integration course consists of a language course and an orientation course. In the orientation course immigrants will learn about the values upon which German society is based. After attending 645 lessons, they can complete the integration course with an examination.

Providers and attendees

What is an integration course provider? Who teaches the course? Who monitors the quality of the courses? And how much does an integration course cost? Find out here.

Types of courses – the right one for each person

Everyone is different – and this is true of how we learn things. To meet these different learning needs, normal integration courses are supplemented by specialist courses aimed at young adults, women, parents and those with specialist literacy or linguistic needs, as well as at migrants who are faster learners. The specialist integration courses comprise up to 945 hours, with the course for fast learners only lasting 430 hours.

Evaluation of integration courses in 2006

The final evaluation report for 2006 was presented at the beginning of 2007.

Examples: Immigrants and a teacher tell their stories

Here a teacher reports on her experience in the area of integration courses, and immigrants with all their personal history of integration encourage others to attend an integration course.
